Slogan #56
Don’t Wallow in Self-Pity
Reflection:
While teaching a yoga class focused on discipline today, Mike Tyson’s words came to mind: "Discipline is doing what you hate to do, but doing it like you love it." This aligns perfectly with Slogan #56: "Don’t wallow in self-pity." Both highlight the importance of inner strength and dedication without getting bogged down by negative emotions.
As I guided the students through challenging poses, I emphasized the importance of staying committed to their practice, even when it’s tough. Discipline in yoga, much like in life, isn’t about seeking sympathy but about personal growth and resilience. True discipline means showing up consistently and embracing the process with a positive mindset. It’s easy to feel sorry for ourselves when things get tough, but real growth comes from internal motivation and perseverance. The real reward lies in our transformation.
Encouraging my students to focus on their breath and stay present, I saw how moments of struggle build resilience. By not wallowing in self-pity, we find strength and satisfaction in our progress. Reflecting on my own journey with discipline, I realize it’s about doing the work daily, regardless of recognition, and loving the journey itself. This mindset enhances our practice and enriches our lives.
