Slogan #31

Don’t malign others

Reflection:

As I sit in meditation, the sun slowly descends, casting its warm rays upon my face. I envision the sky transforming into a canvas of oranges and pinks, and my breath exhales to this image of the serene glow of the setting sun. In this tranquil moment, I reflect on the wisdom of Slogan 31: "Don't malign others," and the insights shared by Judy Lief.

With each breath, I feel the sun's warmth, a gentle reminder of the light within and around me. Lief speaks to our human tendency to criticize and blame, often as a means of deflecting our insecurities and faults. Her words echo in my mind, reminding me that every judgment cast upon others is a reflection of my inner turmoil, a way to avoid facing my imperfections. In my practice, I emphasize the importance of kindness and compassion towards myself and others. Yet, as I sit here, I recognize how easily I can fall into the trap of negative thinking. It's humbling to realize that maligning others harms them and disrupts my inner peace.

The descent of the sun feels like a gentle reminder of the impermanence of all things, including our judgments and criticisms. Just as the vibrant colors of the sky gradually fade into the night, so too should our harsh thoughts dissolve, leaving behind a serene space for self-awareness and understanding.

Lief's reflection reminds me to adopt a more mindful approach, to catch myself in moments of negativity, and to shift towards empathy and understanding. This practice, much like yoga or meditation, requires patience and perseverance. Each time I choose not to malign others, I am fostering a more compassionate environment and nurturing my growth.

As the sun dips below the horizon, its last rays touching my face, I make a silent vow to honor the wisdom of Slogan 31. To practice seeing the goodness in others, to speak with kindness, and to remember that every negative thought redirected is a step towards a more peaceful heart. This sunset is a beautiful reminder that we are all capable of change, growth, and embodying the compassion we seek in the world.
