Slogan #35
Don’t try to be the fastest
Reflection
My teacher, Pat Harada’s reflection on the Lojong Slogan "Don’t try to be the fastest" has become a starting point for my own reflection today. Inspired by the National Ballet’s tribute to filmmaker Norman McLaren, Pat encourages us to notice the often-overlooked in-between moments, cultivating mindfulness and presence. Her wisdom urges us to observe our addiction to speed and the urgency it brings. This pressure clouds our ability to be truly present.
Reflecting on her words, I consider my own journey with my changing body. Society pushes us toward perfection, fostering a scarcity mindset. But, Pat’s teachings encourage us to meditate on impatience and perfectionism, cultivating wisdom and compassion instead. My body has become a visual cue to my evolving relationship with myself. It offers a chance to practice self-compassion and honor my body's natural rhythm. This allows me to return to a state where my body feels natural and strong, fostering a healthier relationship with myself. Practicing yoga at home gives me the space to explore these reflections without external pressures, reminding me to be present, compassionate, and accepting of myself.
Pat’s reflection teaches us that the true gift of yoga and meditation is to be fully alive in the present moment. Through my own journey, I notice the thoughts in between, using compassion and breath to let them go.. I allow my body to move naturally from one pose to another, embracing the flow of life and the beauty of mindful movement. This is the essence of living fully and mindfully.
