Slogan #34

Don't Transfer the Ox's Load to the Cow

Reflection:

I chose to sit outside in the midst of a heatwave as I reflect on Slogan #34: "Don't transfer the ox's load to the cow." The scorching sun beats down, the air is thick and heavy, and every instinct urges me to retreat into the cool comfort of my air-conditioned home. But I choose to stay, embracing the discomfort and the lesson it brings. It is hot!

This slogan reminds us to take responsibility for our burdens and not shift them onto others. Sitting here, surrounded by nature’s intensity, I see a metaphor for life’s challenges. The temptation to escape symbolizes our tendency to avoid discomfort. However, real growth happens when we face our burdens head-on. The heat presses down, but so does the beauty of the natural world around me. Birds chirp, leaves rustle, and the earth radiates life. Discomfort and beauty coexist, and by facing the former, we can more deeply appreciate the latter.

Reflecting on this, I realize how often I try to escape life’s heatwaves—those challenging, uncomfortable situations—seeking refuge in temporary comforts. Yet, true reprieve comes from facing these moments, accepting them, and growing through them. In this heatwave, I found a powerful teacher. It shows me the importance of bearing my own burdens and finding strength in discomfort. By not transferring my load to others or seeking constant escape, I cultivate resilience and a deeper connection to the world around me.
