Three Objects, Three Poisons, and Three Seeds of Virtue

Reflection

During my sit today, I practiced Tonglen, using the mantra: "Three objects, three poisons, and three seeds of virtue." I found myself returning to these words repeatedly, especially when my mind started spinning stories and attaching to various sensations.

Breathe in suffering—Exhale out love.

Breathe in love—Exhale suffering.

Inhale compassion—Exhale hate.

Inhale hate—Exhale compassion.

This exchange of breath allowed both me and the other person to heal together. It may not be the traditional Tonglen practice, but it's an honest version of my practice.

As I reflect on today’s slogan, I’m aware of my self-labeling. Labels given to me from a young age that I've held onto to support my identity and those I’ve given myself, treasuring them like gifts. I also categorize others to fit my idea of them. Repeating my mantras was a way to create space between the poison and the object, and to see where my reaction arises from within my body.

This practice helps me release the grip of these labels and cultivate a more compassionate approach towards myself and others. It’s a journey of mindful breathing and reflection, dissolving boundaries created by these labels, and fostering a deeper sense of connection and healing.
