Slogan #7

Giving and Receiving Alternate Naturally

"Equanimity is a state, not a virtue. Through the practice of sending and taking in the breath, I reflect on my past and future actions to stay present, reacting with awareness rather than toxicity."

Ronalyn Dziklinski

Reflection:

Time is the most valuable currency we have. It cannot be bought, and our time on Earth is limited; it will come to an end, whether we like it or not.

Today, my dear friend S and I are back to our weekly writing session. We've been doing this since 2021, and it has become a cornerstone of my routine, helping me stay accountable for my writing, meditation practice, and relationships. In this space, we start by meditating in silence for 20 minutes. Then, we share our experiences from the sit and continue writing in silence until the next alarm rings. This simple practice has become a representation of Slogan #7 for me. Through these sessions, we give and receive each other’s energy, deepening our friendship naturally.

I often compare this to my relationship with my breath. There were times when my inhales felt short or ragged, while my exhales brought calmness. Now, I understand that my breath is a signal from my body, indicating how I am physically, mentally, and emotionally. This awareness allows me to tune into my needs and respond with compassion.

Reflecting further, I remember my first experience with Tonglen. This practice involves taking in the pain of others with each in-breath and sending out helpful wishes with each exhale. It teaches us to be unselfish and helps release old patterns, fostering compassion for ourselves and others. Tonglen can be challenging, so it’s best to start with someone you love, a stranger, or even your barista.

By showing up and practicing regularly, we cultivate a deeper connection with ourselves and those around us. Whether through breath, meditation, or shared time with a friend, the practice of giving and receiving alternates naturally, enriching our lives and relationships.
