Slogan #23

Always Abide by the Three Basic Principles

Reflection:

As I sat with Slogan 23: "Always abide by the three basic principles," I was reminded of the importance of regularly returning to my core values. These principles act like bumpers in a bowling alley, keeping my mindfulness practice on track. A daily practice that brings grounding to each moment I can close my eyes and listen to my breathing.

Honoring Commitments

Honoring commitments is about sticking to promises, especially in mind training. This involves the refuge vow (developing mindfulness and awareness) and the bodhisattva vow (cultivating wisdom and compassion).

Refraining from Outrageous Actions

Steadiness and modesty are crucial. It’s about avoiding drama and needing to be seen as special or advanced. Recognizing the desire for recognition as a stumbling block, I strive to stay humble and true to my practice. As I write this, I smile to myself remembering one of the senior officials giving me a piece of advice that as I continue my refereeing journey I have to remind myself a lot “Stay Humble, Ro.”

Developing Patience

Mind training is a lifelong journey. Patience and an unbiased approach toward myself and others are essential. Knowing myself and maintaining a realistic view helps keep my practice steady and grounded. One day at a time.

Reflecting on these three principles ensures my spiritual practice remains focused, and meaningful while following my path.
