Welcome to the Lojong Slogans
The Lojong slogans are training in expanding the boundaries of our meditation practice to include more and more aspects of our life so that compassion becomes our refuge and a call to action in times of challenge. Lojong is all about the long game and applies traditional teachings and radical self-reflection as our inspiration for action. Tonglen is Tibetan for “taking and sending” and is Lojong’s hands-on practice of self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-transcendence. Tonglen gives us the opportunity to turn things around even though we are hardwired for survival and not for compassion. We learn to make use of the mud in our lives.
These slogans were originally taught by Atisha who was a 10th-century Indian Buddhist teacher. In Tibet, the 12th-century teacher Geshe Chekawa Yeshe Dorje systematized Atisha’s mind training teachings into a series of slogans to produce The Root Text of the Seven Points of Training the Mind. The 59 slogans are subsumed under 7 points or chapters.
